I feel the pressure because I hear what people are saying, he said. If you’re any 19-year-old kid, you are going to hear that stuff. It’s one day or one game. I have a dream and I know how good I can be. I am just going to keep believing in myself.
The intention was to go to Washington to play for coach Lorenzo Romar, one of the elder Porter’s best friends and the younger Porter’s godfather.
It was a nifty plan, and the younger Porter had drawn the support and admiration of fans in the area. But when Romar was fired in March, everything changed. Romar had been the reason he was going to Washington. Now, he was changing his mind. Porter reopened his commitment and decided to instead go home and play for the Tigers, who hired his father as an assistant.
It’s really been a roller coaster, Porter said. I had committed to the coaches, not necessarily the program. I reopened my commitment, and my dad got hired at University of Missouri and that kind of made it easy to play there. I was familiar with the program, I lived there from fifth grade until 11th grade, so it felt like I was meant to be there and it felt like I was coming back home.
